An Android automation tool that records a workflow once and replays it on every phone
In short: BenchFleet records a workflow while you do the task once on one phone, then replays it on every connected phone, a group or one phone, now, on a schedule or from CI. Steps find elements by their text and role, so the same recording works across screen sizes. Workflows come with Pro, at £12 a month + VAT. Other recorders are compared below.
Recording is the quickest way to automate: do the task once and let the tool write it down. What matters afterwards is what the recording turns into, code, a test file or a workflow, and how easily it runs on the next twenty phones. Checked on 23 October 2026 on each tool's own pages. We make BenchFleet.
Free for up to 3 phones, with no account. Pro adds workflows, schedules and AI for up to 25 phones from £12 a month + VAT.
The recorders compared
| Tool | What a recording becomes | Replays on many phones | Where it runs | Website |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BenchFleet | A workflow: steps that find elements by text and role, editable in a visual editor or as YAML | Yes: one phone, a group or every phone, now, on a schedule or from CI | Your phones, at your computers | benchfleet.com |
| Espresso Test Recorder | An Espresso test class in your project | Through your test runner or a device cloud | Android Studio; not for projects that use Compose | developer.android.com |
| Appium Inspector recorder | Client code in the language you pick | Through your test runner | Your computer with an Appium server | appium.io |
| Maestro | YAML flows; Maestro Studio adds commands by clicking elements; maestro record makes a video of a run | Through the CLI or Maestro Cloud | Your computer, or Maestro Cloud ($250 per device a month) | maestro.dev |
| Kobiton scriptless automation | A test case captured from a manual session on a real device | Yes, across its devices | Its cloud or your site | kobiton.com |
| Firebase Test Lab Robo scripts | A JSON script, recorded in Android Studio or written by hand | On Test Lab's devices | Google's data centres; shuts down on 30 September 2027 | firebase.google.com |
| AWS Device Farm | Runs the test suites you upload; no recorder in the facts we checked | Yes, on its devices | AWS data centres | aws.amazon.com/device-farm |
| TestProject | Ended on 31 March 2023 | No longer available | Not applicable | Its sites redirect to tricentis.com |
Google lists Android Studio's "Run with Firebase Test Lab" integration among its deprecated integrations, so check your Android Studio version before relying on the Robo script recorder.
Record once, replay everywhere with BenchFleet Pro
- Allow automation on the phones (Details → Automation); a small helper reads the screen's interface.
- Record. Do the task once on any phone. Your taps and typing become steps that find each element by its text and role, not by its position on the screen.
- Check it. Add Wait for an element, a check of what the screen should show, retries or a loop in the visual editor. A dry run shows what would happen without touching the phones.
- Replay on every phone. Run it on one phone, a group or every phone that matches, after confirming the count; or schedule it, or start it from CI through a signed webhook.
- See every run. Each run has a timeline with screenshots, and a failed one can be replayed step by step with the screens before and after each step: see replaying an automation step by step.
Because steps look for text and roles, the same recording runs on phones with different screen sizes and Android versions; where a screen has no usable interface data, steps fall back to text and image recognition. A new version of a workflow can go to a few canary phones first: see rolling out in stages.
Who it is for
- QA teams who record their key flows and run them on every phone after each build. See Android app testing on real phones.
- Operations teams with routine jobs on company phones. See automating Android phones without code.
Espresso, Android Studio, Appium, Maestro, Kobiton, Firebase Test Lab, AWS Device Farm, TestProject and Tricentis are the names of their owners' products. BenchFleet is not affiliated with any of them.
Questions
Which tool records an Android task once and replays it on many phones?
BenchFleet records a workflow on one phone and runs it on every connected phone or a group. Kobiton's scriptless automation captures a manual session on a real device and reruns it across its devices.
Does Espresso Test Recorder still work?
Google still documents it in Android Studio: it records taps and typing and writes an Espresso test class. Android Studio's known issues say it does not work with projects that use Jetpack Compose.
What happened to TestProject?
TestProject announced on 17 November 2022 that it would end on 31 March 2023, when existing accounts were deactivated. Its sites now redirect to Tricentis.
Does Appium have a recorder?
Appium Inspector has a Recorder tab that turns what you do in Inspector into client code in the language you choose. It writes code; it does not replay on a list of phones by itself.
Will a recording break when the app changes?
Less often when steps find elements by text and role rather than by screen position. BenchFleet does that, falls back to text and image recognition on the screen, and can propose a repair from a failed run.
